Diet plays a large role in the prevention of renal stones. The following are some good tips to follow to help reduce your risks. If you pass a kidney stone, make sure to have your doctor analyze to see what type of stone it is. Your Family Doctor can refer you to a dietician to tailor the diet more for you, but the following is a good start.
When you eat excessive sugar, or animal protien (either milk or meat), changes occur in your body and in the urine that can lead to formatoin of renal stones. The following diet will outline what foods to avoid, and which foods can actually help.
1. Eat plenty of fibre. This includes whole wheat bread, high bran cereal for breakfast, brown rice, wholewheat pasta. You can also add 2 teaspoons of bran to any food.
2. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegatables. These are great way to increase your fibre, and get important vitamin. Eat the skin of the potatoes.
2. Cut down on animal protein such as meat. Try eating no more than 3 ounzes of meat in one sitting.
3. Do not eat more than 2 of the followin per day: eggs, yogurt, milk
4. Do not eat eggs and meat on the same day.
5. Avoid simple sugars. Avoid cake, sweets, biscuits, chocolates, and especially AVOID SOFTDRINKS.
6. Drink plenty of Water. Aim for 8 to10 glasses of clear fresh water per day.
7. If the stone you passed was oxalate formed, avoid the following oxalate foods: strong tea, coffee, chocolate, peanuts, spinach, rhubarb & beetroot.
8. Drink lemon juice. (lots of it)
